CRL supports CGL Rail for a decade on the DLR line

City Greenwich Lewisham Rail Link plc (CGL Rail) holds the Concession for the Lewisham Extension (LEX) of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London.  The Lewisham Extension consists of the following DLR stations, all located on the south route of the network: Mudchute, Island Gardens, Cutty Sark, Greenwich, Deptford Bridge, Elverson Road and Lewisham – the south route terminal station.  The LEX includes a tunnel beneath the River Thames between Mudchute and Greenwich, and Island Gardens and Cutty Sark are located within this tunnel as sub-surface stations.

In 2011, CRL were contracted by CGL Rail to carry out some minor platform repair works. What resulted is a partnership that has been sustained for around a decade and still going on.

The nature of the LEX infrastructure is similar to most rail infrastructures in terms of type of assets. These range from tunnels to stations to bridges and many more. CRL’s diverse expertise was well-suited for maintenance of such infrastructure. Our capabilities in surveys, concrete repairs, sealant application, structural strengthening, grouting, resin injection, application of coatings & membranes etc has been of immense benefit in helping CGL ensure that their assets are maintained to a very high standard.

Over the last decade, CRL have carried out works such as;

    • Concrete repairs to platform supports,
    • Resin injection to tunnel rings between Mudchute and Greenwich,
    • Application of sealants to cess beams, brickwalls, and retaining structures,
    • Overbanding to joints at Brookmill park bridge, Lewisham box section and Greenwich cut and cover tunnel,
    • Extensive application of protective coatings at all LEX stations. These included staircases, canopies, operations rooms, platforms and foot bridges,
    • Application of waterproof membranes at Lewisham and Island Gardens,
    • Brick repairs and repointing across all stations,
    • Drone surveys, and
    • Specific surveys of the infrastructure alonfg the line.

"A long-term relationship can only be built on trust, technical competence and a good safety culture. CRL has clearly shown that despite a non-framework arrangement, they are capable of sustaining performance year after year."
