In early 2024, CRL (Concrete Repairs Limited) was awarded the contract to restore the Mutton Lane Bridge over the M180, a key route connecting Beltoft and Derrythorpe that was severely damaged after a lorry strike compromised one of its beams. The project was crucial for maintaining the flow of cargo and commuter traffic on this vital transport route, and CRL was tasked with completing the restoration with minimal disruption to traffic and ensuring the highest safety standards. The project kicked off in January 2024 during the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase, where CRL worked closely with National Highways to plan road closures, select subcontractors, and schedule works to limit the impact on local commuters and businesses. A lane reduction was implemented on the bridge, and Lane 1 of the M180 was closed to create a safe working zone.

CRL conducted detailed surveys before demolishing the damaged beam and preparing for the installation of a new 42-ton replacement beam. The design, approved and validated for safety by AES, marked a critical milestone in the restoration process. Throughout the project, CRL maintained strong engagement with the local community.

The company employed local talent, including a cleaner, and coordinated with a nearby farmer to ensure uninterrupted access to the project site, even improving the farmer’s access track upon completion of the work. This focus on community engagement was a key aspect of the project’s success.

Ainscough provided the crane required to lift and install the massive beam, which was then securely reinforced. Additional structural repairs were carried out to prevent further deterioration and ensure long-term stability. Once the beam was installed, subcontractor Versco fitted a new parapet, and the entire bridge was waterproofed, tarmacked, and white-lined to prevent future corrosion. These preventative measures extended the lifespan of the bridge, restoring it to full functionality and allowing traffic to resume at the national speed limit.

The Mutton Lane Bridge restoration concluded with a formal reopening ceremony, symbolizing the project's success in balancing safety, efficiency, and community collaboration. CRL's careful planning, effective execution, and engagement with the local community ensured that the project met its objectives and restored this critical piece of infrastructure, contributing to CRL’s strong reputation in civil construction and infrastructure repair.
