Concrete Repairs Limited recently undertook a significant project on a Service Reservoir in Cambridge for a major water utility company. Serving a population area of approximately 250,000 homes, the reservoir ensures resilience in the event of major outages at nearby water treatment facilities. The works involved the thermal waterproofing of the concrete reservoir roof.

Originally constructed with precast concrete slabs covered by a waterproofing membrane and ballast, the reservoir's roof began experiencing issues such as cracking and water ingress during a recent maintenance inspection. These issues were attributed to the failure of the existing waterproofing membrane and the natural movement of concrete slabs due to temperature variations.

To address these challenges, CRL collaborated closely with Triflex, a specialist in waterproofing solutions, under the guidance of Mott MacDonald Bentley. The project involved removing the existing membrane and ballast, conducting necessary concrete repairs, and applying a new waterproofing system integrated with insulation to mitigate thermal fluctuations.

The chosen solution included Triflex ProTect, a robust polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) waterproofing system known for its durability and dynamic crack-bridging capabilities certified to EN 1504-2 standards. This system, reinforced and hydrolysis-resistant, ensures longevity and reliability even in challenging environments.

Key aspects of the project included the application of Triflex Cryl Primer for substrate preparation, rapid curing concrete repairs using Triflex materials, and the installation of Triflex ProDetail for enhanced waterproofing at critical areas. The system's quick curing properties allowed for rainproof protection within 30 minutes and full cure within 60 minutes, facilitating efficient project delivery.

Moreover, the incorporation of 50mm XPS insulation beneath reinstated ballast not only enhanced thermal stability but also aligned with sustainability goals. The project also included the installation of a surrounding land drain, integrated seamlessly with the waterproofing system to ensure comprehensive protection and performance.

Throughout the project, CRL maintained rigorous quality control measures, conducting electronic testing of completed sections to confirm watertightness. This approach, supported by Triflex's technical expertise, enabled Concrete Repairs Limited to deliver a high-quality waterproofing solution tailored to the unique challenges of this project.

CRL's collaboration with Triflex exemplifies the commitment to excellence in concrete repair and waterproofing, ensuring the long-term integrity and functionality of our critical infrastructure.
