For
Bridges
CRL Highways has extensive experience in the design and delivery of temporary works that support highway structures during construction activities. Temporary works include engineered solutions such as shoring, propping and scaffolding, which are used to support, protect and provide safe access to permanent structures while works are carried out.
Although temporary in nature, these systems must be designed with the same level of engineering care as permanent works. Temporary works must follow strict safety standards to prevent structural collapse, safely manage loads and maintain the stability of the structure throughout construction operations.
Structural Support Systems
When developing temporary works solutions, CRL Highways works closely with temporary works engineers to ensure all key elements are properly considered. These may include falsework, formwork, scaffolding, propping, shoring, excavation support systems, and crane or piling platforms, depending on the project requirements.
Temporary works are commonly required on highway bridge infrastructure when carrying out demolition, structural repairs, refurbishment works or heavy lifting operations. In many cases, bridges are found to have deteriorating bearings, which can pose a long-term risk if the structure is not adequately supported.
Temporary propping systems can be carefully installed to stabilise the bridge while avoiding additional stress or movement within the structure. In these situations, a precisely designed propping system provides immediate structural support while accommodating the bridge’s existing condition.
During refurbishment works, temporary support systems may need to remain in place for extended periods and may require ongoing monitoring and adjustment, including the re-energising of hydraulic jacks to maintain stability as site conditions change.
The development of a temporary works design typically involves creating a detailed design brief, performing structural calculations, producing technical drawings and carrying out independent design checks (Categories 0–3) by suitably qualified and experienced temporary works designers.

Complex Temporary
Works
Safety and compliance are central to all temporary works activities. Designs must be developed, checked and inspected by competent personnel to ensure that structural stability, strength and deflection limits are maintained throughout the works.
CRL Highways has a proven track record in successfully delivering highways infrastructure projects that require complex and highly engineered temporary works solutions. Through careful planning, engineering expertise and collaboration with specialist designers, CRL ensures that temporary works are delivered safely, efficiently and in full compliance with industry standards.
