Waterproofing Solutions
Highway bridge decks are vulnerable to damage from water and air-borne chlorides as well as other contaminants, which can lead to deterioration and in severe cases structural failure. For this reason, installing a high-performance waterproofing membrane is an essential part of both bridge construction and refurbishment projects.
Because bridge decks are exposed to dynamic traffic loading, they must also be protected using elastic, crack-bridging waterproofing systems that can accommodate movement.
To improve the durability of reinforced concrete bridges, all movement joints, construction joints and bridge deck surfaces must be waterproofed. This prevents water and chlorides from penetrating the concrete and causing damage to the structure or the embedded steel reinforcement.
For Long Durability
Bridge deck waterproofing membranes are available in several chemical types, with spray-applied systems being the most commonly used solution in the UK.
Waterproofing systems should be designed in accordance with current UK standards and the requirements of EN1504, with particular attention given to detailing to ensure that chloride-contaminated surface water cannot penetrate the reinforced concrete bridge deck.
These systems can be applied very quickly, often exceeding 2,000 m² per day, using industry-standard specialist equipment. This helps reduce the need for extended traffic management closures and minimises disruption to road users.
When designed and installed correctly, the waterproofing deck membrane provides a long-lasting and highly durable protective layer, helping to reduce future maintenance requirements.
