Safety Systems
Vehicle Restraint Systems (VRS) are safety barriers installed on carriageways, central reservations and bridges to prevent vehicles from entering restricted areas. They play a key role in protecting both vehicle occupants and highway infrastructure.
VRS systems are essential for improving road safety, particularly in high-risk locations. Their primary function is to restrict and redirect errant vehicles using a combination of barriers, transitions and energy-absorbing end terminals, helping to reduce the severity of impacts and prevent further incidents.
Infrastructure
The most commonly used VRS systems in the UK include temporary concrete or steel barriers, crash cushions and steel wire rope systems, all of which are tested to EN 1317 standards.
Across the UK, VRS systems are widely installed on motorways and dual carriageways, where they are primarily used to prevent crossover accidents and protect vehicles from impacting fixed roadside hazards. They are also used on roundabout approaches to protect both infrastructure and road users.
On bridges, VRS systems are often installed in combination with parapet systems to provide effective vehicle containment. They are also widely used in roadworks environments, where they help protect both the workforce and road users during construction and maintenance activities.

VRS Project Delivery
CRL Highways, part of CRL, works closely with a well-established supply chain and leading manufacturers to provide a full range of VRS solutions.
Many VRS installation or replacement schemes require temporary road closures or phased working to minimise disruption to the travelling public. Early engagement through the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process is therefore critical to ensure safe and efficient delivery.
CRL Highways has extensive experience in successfully delivering VRS projects, carefully managing programme requirements, safety considerations and disruption to road users and stakeholders.
