Concrete repair is a core in-house capability and the foundation of CRL’s business since its establishment in 1955. For over 70 years, we have successfully delivered concrete repair and refurbishment works across a wide range of structures and sectors, building a strong reputation for quality, durability, and technical expertise.
CRL assisted in the development of the European Standard BS EN 1504 for the repair and protection of concrete and applies this standard across all concrete repair and refurbishment projects. This ensures that our solutions consistently meet recognised best practice and regulatory requirements.
In our early years, CRL developed its own proprietary Cathite Repair System, using site-batched materials to deliver effective and reliable repairs. As materials technology has advanced, our approach has evolved. Today, the majority of materials we use are factory-batched to ensure consistency, performance, and quality control.
for every job
The repair of concrete highway structures demands not only high-quality materials, but more importantly the expertise of skilled tradespeople. For durable, long-lasting repairs, the removal of defective concrete, preparation of exposed steel reinforcement, and reinstatement of new concrete must be carried out correctly and in accordance with best practice.
CRL Highways adopts proven methods tailored to the scale and condition of each repair. Localised defects on carriageways, bridge decks, piers, and abutments are typically treated using electric or pneumatic tools, while larger volumes are removed using hydro demolition to achieve controlled breakout without damaging the sound substrate.
Concrete reinstatement is completed using hand-applied repair mortars or, for larger areas, sprayed gunite or self-compacting concrete. Particular care is taken with surface finishing to ensure repairs match the colour, texture, and profile of the existing concrete. Our workforce consistently delivers high-quality finishes that integrate with the structure while maintaining safety and performance standards.
Following concrete repair works, protective coatings can be applied to exposed concrete surfaces to enhance durability and improve appearance. These systems provide an effective barrier against carbonation and chloride ingress, significantly slowing the corrosion process and extending the service life of the structure.
All coating and repair works are carried out by CRL’s directly employed operatives and are supervised by our Chartered Engineers and Surveyors, ensuring delivery in a safe, controlled, and professional manner. CRL invests approximately £0.5 million each year in training and competence development, ensuring our workforce has the skills required to undertake complex repair works safely and effectively.
Every operative works to an annually reviewed training matrix covering a comprehensive range of technical and safety modules. This is supported by regular training delivered in collaboration with our material supply partners, alongside continuous development through CRL’s in-house School of Excellence. This commitment to people and skills underpins the quality and reliability of every project we deliver.
CRL is an approved applicator for all leading concrete repair material manufacturers. All materials used are CE marked in accordance with BS EN 1504, providing assurance of compliance, durability, and long-term performance.
