Safety Systems
Highway gantries are overhead, bridge-like structures that span motorways and major roads. They are used to support traffic signs, electronic MS4 signals, traffic monitoring cameras and tolling equipment.
Most highway gantries are cantilever or portal structures manufactured from steel, designed to provide a stable and durable platform for essential traffic management systems.
Gantry Infrastructure Solutions
The introduction of new design standards created a requirement to refurbish and modify many existing gantries with modern, safer and more sustainable structures, using a standardised design wherever possible.
Modern gantry designs now incorporate concealed internal steps, improving safety for maintenance teams whilst also reducing the risk of unauthorised access.
In recent years, National Highways led a nationwide gantry refurbishment and modification programme that involved the systematic removal of ageing or non-compliant gantry access platforms.
The new purpose-designed gantry refurbishment meets current safety and performance standards, improves accessibility and ensures compliance across the wider highway network. These upgraded structures are designed to align with modern infrastructure requirements while supporting essential motorway systems such as traffic signage, monitoring equipment and signalling.
Through early contractor involvement (ECI), CRL Highways, has successfully delivered gantry replacement works in a safe and cost-effective manner. This collaborative approach allows construction planning, safety considerations and installation methods to be carefully coordinated from an early stage of the project.
Works are delivered with a strong focus on minimising traffic management requirements, reducing the need for lane closures and helping to limit disruption to road users, local communities and key project stakeholders wherever possible.

What our clients say
“We’ve also managed to complete a considerable amount of works on the Gantry Platform Renewal Scheme which has been in the pipeline for around
a decade, this is no mean feat by any stretch of the terminology! I can’t thank you enough for the efforts and contributions on this in the face of
continuing adversity, you should be immensely proud of yourselves”
