Concrete Repairs to Kincardine Transmission Tower (XD130), Firth of Forth

CRL Scotland has been appointed by SP Energy Networks (SPEN) as the specialist contractor to deliver a major concrete repair and protection package to the North Transmission Tower, located on the banks of the Firth of Forth. The Kincardine Tower (XD130) stands at 153.9 metres, making it the tallest transmission tower in Scotland. It forms an essential part of the 275kV electricity network that spans the River Forth, ensuring the reliable transmission of power across central Scotland.

Situated within the former Longannet Power Station site now being redeveloped following its demolition in 2021, the tower’s foundations are supported by driven pre-cast piles, grouped under five pile cap heads. Four caps support the main tower legs, while a fifth supports the access bridge structure. The entire foundation system lies within the tidal zone of the Forth estuary, creating a technically challenging environment for repair operations.

The scope of CRL Scotland’s work includes hydro-demolition to remove deteriorated concrete, reinforcement steel repairs, the installation of sacrificial anodes for corrosion control, and reinstatement using dry-spray (gunite) concrete. Follow-on blacksmith works will ensure the long-term durability of the structure.

Given the site’s sensitive environmental setting, strict measures have been implemented to protect local wildlife, particularly an otter holt located beneath the access bridge. All works are being delivered in accordance with tide schedules, environmental controls, and stringent quality standards to ensure safety, sustainability, and reliability.

This project showcases CRL Scotland’s capability to deliver complex, high-specification concrete repair works in challenging and environmentally sensitive conditions while supporting the integrity of Scotland’s critical energy infrastructure.

The Kincardine Tower project showcased our team’s ability to deliver high-quality concrete repairs in a challenging tidal environment. Working closely with SP Energy Networks, we successfully completed all works safely, on time, and to exacting standards. Our focus on environmental protection, particularly safeguarding the nearby otter holt, was a key priority throughout. I’m proud of the professionalism and dedication shown by everyone involved in delivering this complex and vital infrastructure project.
