Last week, CRL and Go Green Ltd visited Presfield High School & Specialist College in Southport to deliver careers talks and STEM activities to sixth formers with autism. This was done as part of our social value delivery on the Dunes Leisure Centre refurbishment.
As the school is just down the road from the leisure centre, this was a great opportunity to speak to the kids about a project that is relevant to them as many know and have visited the leisure centre.
As well as learning about the varied job and training opportunities our industry has to offer, the kids had a chance to be creative and build a replica of the Southport Marine Way Bridge out of spaghetti, marshmallows and rubber bands. Prizes were handed out for bridges that passed our weight test (a tin of baked beans).
We finished off by handing out biodegradable ‘tree pens’ (plastic-free pens containing pine tree seeds) and wildflower seed packs which the kids can plant around the school grounds and update us on as they grow.
Go Green Ltd also spoke to the kids about waste and environmental issues both in general and specific our industry as well as providing their own activities. It was a great opportunity to collaborate and offer the kids a more varied and interesting day. We are grateful to Go Green Ltd for accepting our invitation to join us and hope to do more together in the future.
Overall, the session went well, and we received great feedback from both the kids and teachers. Thank you to John Bullen and Kyle Newman for their help in making it a successful day.
